Subject: 芝草成林芟芟其麥
Dear Mr. Whitburn,
It's so nice to talk to you in Shangri La Hotel yesterday. You asked me the full meaning of the calligraphy I wrote, and now I make a brief interpretation for you. Wish both you and Patrick do like it.
The character (芝) is a kind of mythic fungus which is expensive herb. (草) means grass or weed which is very mediocre. (林) is forest......the meaning is you have a lot of students no matter what quality. (芟) means abundant, (麥) is wheat field.
I picked up this 2 phases from 2 ancient Chinese poems and put it together ended it up with 林 & 麥.
The full meaning is : Linmark is a good school and both you and Patrick are good teacher and trained up a lot of talent in business field, most of all have enjoyed illustrious careers.
Best regards,
Stephen
